Why can't I go back to some of the pics that popped up before . The EYEBALL plant post? Man that garden is it a CASTLE ..I LOOOOVE the terra cotta pot those things sell for 500+ $ here in Vancouver.. and the fountain SUBLIME..now I am jaleous with my 2 plastic pot 24"ponds:-) But then that fountain the Rocoon would call it his Jacuzzi bathtub I guess ...It must be in England..I can't recall the post.. that's why sometimes I loose track here when I get my postin alert in my e-mail only the 1st on has the link the next ones don't so I have to go back to the 1st alert that I have erased than WHAT..bizarre system can't they arrange for EACH alert to send me a DIRECT LINK to the posting the alert is about ? Dear Webmasters at UBC? hint hint hint. Thank you. Yesterday we tanned our adam bums at Wreck beach yes the gay nude beach...and its just across the street of UBC gardens .. Would be cool if they would make a nude day were anyone could walk as adam and eve through UBC gardens. Hey the flowers wont' mind..We have nude bike rides etc why not two nude UBC walk one in spring one in fall for a good cause...say collecting $ for new exotics etc.. or for skin cancer research..
I am waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay off the subject here but thougth of that when coming up from the beach.

Here is a pic of the most gorgeous lettuce flower, my NIGHTINGALE hydrangea blooming 1st time ( I rescued another one ) unknown color for next year
the weed that I love and grow at the entrance it makes candles up to 8 feet tall in bright yellow and leave up to 2feet long and the way they are attached makes me want to design a wedding dress skirt
My black hollyberry from HL seeds someone told me it will only flower NEXT year
as this year it only grew 1foot tall..its a bi annual( what ever that is ) I am told. to me that would be flower two times per years? It would have been a gorgeous contrast to the yellow sunflowers that are dwarfing it now ..but the leaves are healthy.
Chanel the Lady of the house now 6month old , a KALE crowned Pizza our favorite,
and a POOR shot at the nursery.. You know when you droole over plants you won't buy because of the Racoon or more often THE PRICE.. See those Purple Barons ? thats a $100+ we are looking at. I will have that from seeds I swear. I am not giving up. Here in Vancouver they only know $4 9 19 29 39 49.9 shoe prices ..and what you get for 4.99 usually is a 3" pot with some microscopic plant inside.. sad sad ..
I did CRACK on a whole collection of grasses on sale the bill had more than on zero but I have not a collection of many grasses over 12 pots.. and hopefully will be able to learn to collect seeds and share them ...my purple Baron still growing but no brush yet WILL IT MAKE IT before the frost ?
The rainbow colors of our multicolor Swiss Chard salad red potato roots :-) I was too curious as it makes no leaves and home grown tomatoes and strawberries ( although someone else eats the strawberries often before me ) :-)
Last but not least why not brag about my 1st DIY built Gazebo all 100% recycled wood from www.freecycle.org and some friends. Only the tarp and paint is new "moon shadow" huuuu huuu romantic name isn't it ? Well I still have to do the edge around it on top and the find some weather restant nylon to do protect from rain and snow in the winter..but its a process that follows the arrival and finding of things :-)..

Just imagine that with our KALE pan fry or stirr fry :-) My South African Wine colores Geranium with velvet leaves. Isn't pretty an oily pan fried Banana leaf after using it to cover the Kale and Salmon on the flat table grill.?I love the reflections.
Finally re sprayed my 70s Ferrari pool chairs ( why not earlier I wonder now, well there is no pool anymore) and made a Crystal chandelier with some left over from a neighbors trash :-) The Squirrel seems to love looking at it also ..must catch it in action.
Hey and some more of the garden you must be bored by now .. and the kitten getting waaaaaaaaaaaay too adventurous hahah she survived and is spade by now so hopefully will calm down

 

Mmmmmm Vic - looks delicious. I always eat my Kale raw, but that stir fry looks awesome! I am going to try something like that next year.

I grow that kind of colorful swiss chard also - it's called 'brite lights' I love all the rainbow colors too. Very ornamental and edible.

Wahouu my cherry tomatoes are sure fooling many in being something else. But they are JUST Cherry tomotoes . I will upload MANY pics of them in my galleries

Vic the candle type Plant with the soft velvet leaves can be a real weed. My mother loved hers and let it go and the following year she had it multiply by what seemed thousands. I accidently let one go here and I ended up with many the following year. I would pull excess seedlings. Maybe your weather keeps it under control but definatly a weed here.

Liz, this brings me to another topic...


Why do local greenhouses not tell people when plants are an invasive species? I've had to learn the hard way, a few times. It seems like they go out of their way here, not to tell you. Anything to make a quick buck, I guess.


I don't buy too many nursery plants, but when I do, I am very leery and I always research them before adding them to any of my gardens.

Here's me on my HD Lowrider "Grey Ghost" and another at the Super Bowl in Tampa Florida (2/09 with the Mrs enjoying our hometown Steelers' win against Arizona).

While I'm here, I would like to ask a question. Pittsburgh, we are looking to put some kind of shrub that doesn't grow wide but grows sort of 4 feet tall to go between my next door neighbor's driveway and our yard. The swath we have to plant in is a strip along their driveway about 2 feet wide and 25 feet in length. Any suggestions for this climate? We were going to put a "Sky pencil holly" but my neighbor expressed concern that the berries are poisonous to their little kids and cat and possibly our dog. Any suggestions for something without berries that would shield their driveway view from our yard somewhat? THx.

Yes, I was going to suggest Hollyberry shrubs of some kind too, of course - so good choice. So ornamental and pretty. Great that they're evergreens as well.

:-) Hello Liz yes thank I know its a weed by the thousands not so here.. anyway I actually managed to find a few in the area growing in ditches and WENT TO COLLECT THEM haha Yes I did. I just love the structure. There were I grow them its the front of the house street level and nothing much likes growing there beside UGLY weeds. At least this one fite with the rocks and gravel . I planted 10 of them only two grew. One made a flower the other one was very slow but NOW has 2feet wide leaves absolutely gorgeous.
I cant resist .
We can't wait to put some sort of weed sheet there and I am looking for red rubber mulch I saw on TV it looks stunning ( don't know price yet) is not and last for years on years and is eco green recycled ...

I am still wondering now my curly kale ( boerekol) is now about 3 feet tall and still growing no signe of a flower or another shoot absolutely divine we eat it every day either stirr fried of like spinach etc.. BUT I wonder will it also grow through the winter like the Red Russian kale that has made flowers ( where we let it) and has many off shoots branches...it's never ending we are in Kale heaven ...One of my Swiss chard 2m2 is surprisingly given me a very poor crop compared t the other side of the house
The earth content and exposure seems the same. normal earth mixed with oranic earth and mushroom manure. Tomorrow its getting a one try of "pipi" mix haha
as that did wonders on the other side. Tomatoes were and are still great/ Although these tiny ones who refused to grow I have put in a pot and suddently NOW past 3 weeks they are starting so I guess they will have to inside at night after the cooler weather comes facing south maybe an indoor crop.
I am drooling over my row of Teddiebear sunflowers same place new species slightly shorter but so much nicer ...and so many more blooms and the squirrel seems NOT interested.
LZ vanilla Marie Golds are doing very nicely. Am collecting seeds now into paper envelopes as per her instruction ( I saw some sweating inside my plastig bags WITH holes ohh horror) so I switched to paper. Today inherited early snow Crocus Bulbs from friends to put into the law, after that you cut the leaves with the lawn.

I managed a soso second partial blooming of the LUPINS collected loads of seeds
NOW dont know must I plant them BEFORE the winter or in spring only ? They should stay same color.
I never knew I had such green fingers . A yes I cracked over a gras sale now I am collecting grasses seeds. Hope not to early .. but I found out If I wait too later suddenly it rains and they are all gone or soggy wet or a big gust of wind and then WHERE will the grass grow again. I want loads of perennial decorative grasses that why I inbvested in these. I put them in 1 x1 feet plastic pots to replace all my dead roses from last year. Now someone told me they MAY DYE if the winter is too cold? I thought all grasses are tough. Open to any suggestions for that by anyone out there .Someone told me to sink the pots into the earth.. Hey that is a lot of digging
and I dont have that much land ...as I want to move them around.
but then MAYBE I sink the pots under the pine tree in the earth where nothing grows
as in the winter is should not affect the grasses..

What's nicer than some golden ribbon Cypress they like heat and hot they grow in Italy or you can get darker green ones. and cut them in shapes
ONLY problem very easy to keep away is APHIDS. You can feed them an anti aphid before the months with an "R" like September October ..etc.. and that will take you 30min max one time only
You can cut them into ANY shape very easy.
I think dwarf Laurel would also do well (correct me if I am wrong with the climate)
otherwise why not put tall flowers like Cannas they come in many colors and are up to 4-5 feet tall woth Orange Red white peach pink dark or the Stuttgart variety
that comes with nearly maximum cream + green varigation.. They are bulbs so easy to controle and in warm climats grow divinely.
Sexy bike or shall I say 2nd Madame ? :-)

Re the hedge DE we use a lot of different Pittosporum . They are quick and look after themseves. There are many varieties. Some not tall. All can be clipped.

Re the weed sales HB. Trouble here is that many things seem to be tame then they love our weather and conditions they take off with the birds spreading seeds. Eg parrots are happy berry eaters. Holly here is a noxious weed. At least the plain lovely green with the red berries is. I have many up along the foot path growing as part of the dust barrier. All self seeded along with apple trees from commercial crops that that used to grow in the area. Cherry plums every where. Were very pretty this year. The one that gets me down is the wandering Jew. I always have a bit of ROFLMAO when people ask about it's care. We do have some laws about selling weeds but it is only fairly recent. I often wonder if some of the grasses will nick off like the Pampas grass did. At least this time they are our native grasses as far as I can tell being used for mass plantings.

I suspect some peoples cosseted plants are other countries weeds. So read up on things you like but appear to grow in profusion where you see it.

Sometimes I suspect a good cold winter is a wonderful control mechanism.

Laurels get berries, check first if you choose those.
Don't know if Pieris would do where you are. There are some pretty varieties, my fave being one that has new shoots with deep pink turning pale then green as it grows. Has blossoms once, maybe twice a year and they have a mild fragrance.

I am pleased to say I have finaly organised a camera now I just need the owner (son or son inlaw ) to show me what to do and how to load. May finaly get pics of the ferral wisteria etc.


Re Laural hedge berries. The plant needs to be mature and flower, hedging usually stops this. We have a very old hedge up the road where they used to lay the seed potatoes out under the 2 rows. It is now a mini cathederal and the wild parrots and possums regularly eat the fruit as do fruit bats.
