Hi There- I am wondering if anyone can ID this tree. The trunk bark is interesting, almost looks like a Crepe Myrtle, but someone else told me it was a dogwood? I was told it blooms white Thank you!
possibly Stewartia monodelpha from the leaf shape and bark colouring/pealing if it was a dogwood the leaves have a characteristic bundle of fibres that appear when you pull them apart. the the leaves are almost fully flushed fold them in perpendicular to the main vein and gently rip the leaf. you will find that there are files along the veins. if it was stewartia then the leaves dont have these fibres
The bark kind of resembles Satomi dogwood. Leaves are looking like a dogwood too. https://forums.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/threads/satomi-dogwood-trunk.104973/#post-446701 But I'm not familiar with Stewartia. Stewartia and dogwood should have pretty different flowers, so if you have seen those, you should know which one it is.
Can you get a close-up pic of a stronger-growing shoot higher up in the tree? With these pics of short, slow-growing shoots it's hard to see if the leaves are alternate or opposite. Stewartia has alternate leaves, most (but not all) dogwoods have opposite leaves.
