Lots of stories on our local news about this being a great year for mushrooms. ‘It’s like a treasure hunt’: B.C. conditions are magic for mushrooms | Globalnews.ca I don't see it in my space - I suspect that the mycelium which produce fungal growth have likely died during extended periods of drought. There aren't even any puffballs where there were hundreds just a few years ago.
This year's fall mushroom crop is a lot better than last year's, which was practically nonexistent due to the late arrival of fall rains. Summer and fall rainfall have been nearly normal this year, but it has not been a great year for Chanterelle mushrooms. I think that the fall crop depends partly on late spring rainfall to initiate mycelium networks that need to grow sufficiently to prepare them for fall reproduction. This year's May and June rainfall was below normal at YVR, and I blame that for the relatively poor mushroom crop in October. While gathering rather meager harvests of Chanterelles last month, I noticed that other mushroom species were also not very abundant. Of course, this only applies to local (southwest BC) conditions. Other parts of BC may be totally different.
